Life goes on, and we have a great selection of new arrivals and featured wines at very affordable prices plus some great Champagnes, Bordeaux, Burgundies and Barolos for those special occasions. Thanksgiving's just around the corner so give this fabulous list a scroll, we're sure you'll find something of interest. The staff at CSW promises a bipartisan effort to offer great values to our customers in the months ahead - no spin, no spoof, just great Natural Wines! Items Mentioned in this Article:
Alsace Schueller, Gerard 2006 Alsace Pinot BlancOur second shipment of this great natural wine has arrived and is selling like hot-cakes! No wonder, it's a full-bodied and very complex Pinot Blanc balanced by good acidity and mineral character. Hard to find in France and only at CSW in the US - really worth a try! white | 61 in stock | Natural | $13.99 |
Loire Bregeon, Michel 2005 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Sur Lie Bregeon's vineyards, in Gorges, are on Gabbro, a hard black granit with shallow topsoils of clay and silex giving dense, structured wines that age beautifully. The 2005 has slight almond, lemon and mushroom aromas, a palate of wet stones and hints of anise with a long finish and good acidity. Needs decanting or a few days open to show at it's best. white | 25 in stock | Natural | $12.99 |
Bossard (Domaine L'Ecu) 2006 Muscadet Sevre et Maine Expression OrthogneissA terrific effort from Guy Bossard, this Muscadet is aromatically complex and the palate is deep and long with mint and anise notes mixed with stony minerality. While it won't age as long as the Cuvee Granit, it should develop nicely over the next 5 years or so... white | 55 in stock | BioDynamic | $19.99 |
Robinot (l'Opera des Vins) 2005 Vin de Table Francais Concerto D'OnissA delicious Pineau D'Aunis with elegant medium-bodied fruit - dense strawberry/raspberry with good acidity and a hint of white pepper. Robinot works naturally in the vineyard and in the cellar, with minimal SO2. Definitely worth a try! red | 44 in stock | Natural | $19.99 |
Belliviere 2006 Coteaux du Loir Rouge Gorge Eric and Cristine Nicolas do fantastic work with Chanin Blanc and Pineau D'Aunis in Jasnieres and the Coteaux du Loir. Organic farming, old vines, very low yields and all-natural cellar work give fabulous results. In 2006 the old and younger vines of Pineau D'Aunis were vinified together for the Rouge Gorge. The nose is lovely with raspberry, cranberry and white pepper, the palate is medium-bodied and balanced with a great finish. red | 11 in stock | Natural | $24.99 |
Beaujolais Descombes, Georges 2007 Regnie The lovely and complex aromas come from a long slow fermentation with wild yeasts, not to mention great vineyard work and low yields. This gorgeous wine got better for 3 days in my fridge...try it, you'll like it! red | 23 in stock | Natural | $23.99 |
Belliviere 2005 Coteaux du Loir Vieilles Vignes EparsesWhy, you might ask, is this wine being closed-out? We have no idea. It's fantastic - 50 to 70 yeare-old vines, high-toned citrus, apple and honey aromas, great mineral finish with good acidity. Yes, it's sweet - get over it! Buy it , drink it, it's delicious..... white | 31 in stock | Natural | $17.99 |
Belliviere 2005 Jasnieres Les RosiersA beautiful Chenin Blanc. Pure, focused aromas and lovely fruit, with good minerality, covered in it's youth by 13 grams/liter of residual sugar. Yes, it's demi-sec but it's wonderful - we're embarassed to sell it at this low price. white | 28 in stock | Natural | $17.99 |
Blanchet, Francis 2007 Pouilly Fumé Cuvee SiliceOnce a year we get our allocation of Francis Blanchet Pouilly-Fumé. It's always terrific. One of the few left in the AOC who makes a subtle, racy, mineral- infused Sauvignon. Elegant, delicious and superbly food-friendly. white | 38 in stock | Natural | $21.99 |
Burgundy White De Moor, Alice and Olivier 2006 Chablis RosetteA great vintage for Rosette, fuller bodied than the previous few years but with the acidity and structure to back it up. Lemon and herbal aromas expand on the palate with dense extremely mineral flavors that linger on the long finish. A great Chablis and another fine effort from Alice and Olivier, who are making some of the most exciting wines in the region! white | 20 in stock | Organic | $33.99 |
Prudhon 2004 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru La Chateniere2004 White Burgundies from Prudhon have finally arrived! These are always some of our favorites, and reasonably priced too. The 04 Chateniere has lovely aromatics and great mineral length - 1er Cru Chassagne quality at Saint Aubin prices! Don't delay there's not much available... white | 35 in stock | Natural | $31.99 |
Cote-de-Nuit Bouvier, Rene 2006 Marsannay Clos du RoyRené Bouvier did beautifully in 2006 achieving a level of elegance and balance superior to 2005. The Clos du Roy is a great Marsannay with slight spice showing in the dark berry flavors. Drinking well young but has the structure to improve with 5 to 10 years of aging. red | 29 in stock | Natural | $34.99 |
Bart 2006 Marsannay Les LongeroiesThe Longeroies vineyard is mid-slope on the North end, giving a plump, fairly soft wine in 2006, with very pretty, lush strawberry/cherry fruit. A great value, drink now or keep 3 to 5 years. (All the Bart wines are bottled unfined and unfiltered.)
red | 36 in stock | Natural | $21.99 |
Rhone Fenouillet 2007 Vin De Pays de Vaucluse Domaine Fenouillet, in Beaumes-de-Venise, makes a small quantity of this delicious Vin de Pays. It comes once a year and quickly sells out, due to the satisfying spicy, cherry fruit - a great value! red | 106 in stock | $8.99 |
Texier 2006 Côte du Rhône Brézème Domaine de Pergault VVTasted from barrels last winter, this wine was superb. "I think it's my best so far" says Eric. The vineyard is 1/2 hectare of very old Syrah "Petite Serine" vines. The fruit was dark and intense, but still bright and balanced, with good acidity. Fabulous length with with a deep, spicy finish. This wine belongs in your cellar. red | 15 in stock | Natural | $36.99 |
Gonon 2006 Saint-Joseph Rouge Every old school Syrah lovers dream. The palate has wonderfully rich fruit, that is exceptionally pure and coupled with lovely acidity. There is lovely earthy sweetness to the fruit and an animal character that kicks in on the back end. The finish lingers and shows great complexity already at this young age but this will improve over the next ten years. Tremendous wine. There is a granular-like texture and suave, sleek tannins. This is Syrah that is a killer value and actually scrap that . . .just a killer wine. This is the third vintage we have been working with Pierre and Jean Gonon and each one gets better. LF red | 50 in stock | Natural | $29.99 |
Verdier-Logel 2006 Cotes du Forez Cuvee des Gourmets 100% Gamay organically grown in the Cotes du Forez. The vineyard enjoys one of the highest elevations in France between 1,300 and 2,000 feet. This imparts the wine with crisp acidity matching the cranberry and spicy raspberry fruit. The finish has true minerality derived from volcanic soil, uniquely differing from Beaujolais terroir. The perfect accompaniment to rich turkey meat with cranberry sauce exhibiting the versatility of Gamay fruit characteristics in tackling the whole Thanksgiving dinner. (John) red | 21 in stock | Natural | $10.99 |
Bossard-Thuaud (Guy Bossard) NV Vin Mousseux de Qualité Methode TraditionelleMade from Gros-Plant, Melon de Bourgogne and Cabernet Franc. Superb Biodynamic farming. Racy aromas of lemon, stones and yeast, super-clean, mineral palate with some weight on the finish. A great value and ages well , too. A 1989 Bossard Brut tasted recently was sublime.... white sparkling | 1 in stock | BioDynamic | $17.99 | Non-Discountable |
Misc. France Fremont, Julien 2006 Cidre Pays D'Auge Brut par NatureA very dry cider (too dry for the AOC - "just enough sugar to make the mousse") with complex ripe apple and floral aromas, creamy, earthy spiciness on the palate, refreshing and delicious! 5.5% Alc.
white sparkling | 29 in stock | Natural | $11.99 | Non-Discountable |
Fremont, Julien 2006 Cidre Pays D'Auge Brut Nature "Greniers"We had to include this cider on our list - its rich apple and spice flavors will be perfect with Thanksgiving desserts, and at 5% alcohol you can give some to the kids... A selection of apples coming from a particular orchard of old trees. (Single-orchard cider?) They are kept in a well-ventilated attic for several months, and passerillage occurs, where the apples dry out and the sugar levels concentrate. When these are pressed and fermented, they make a special bottling called Greniers (attic). A remarkably smooth, rich and complex cider for after dinner with pie, crepes, fruit tart...delicious!
white sparkling | 5 in stock | Natural | $14.99 | Non-Discountable |
Huet 2002 Vouvray Pétillant BrutThis Champagne look-a-like is toasty, biscuity, yeasty and full of apples, baking spices and pears. The mousse is so fine it tastes like it should be some $300 tete de cuvee from some huge luxury goods company . . .but wait a second its not. It's an organic, biodynamic, hand harvested, 4 years lees aged kick-ass value. Would love to stick this in a blind tasting of vintage Champagne. LF white sparkling | 32 in stock | BioDynamic | $33.99 | Non-Discountable |
Champagne Chartogne-Taillet NV Champagne Cuvee Sainte-AnneOne of the best Champagne buys in the store - it is incredible that this quality is available for under $40. Suave and polished, with bright fresh fruit notes of apple, browned butter and cashew. This is a seductive Champagne classic in style (50/50 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) with depth and precision. Next to this most of the NV offerings from the big-house brands seem shallow in comparison. It's a difference of character, and depth, and there is a liveliness here never found in mass-produced Champagne. white sparkling | 23 in stock | Natural | $36.99 | Non-Discountable |
Bouvier, Rene 2005 Gevrey-Chambertin Racines du TempsFrom 70 to 80 year-old vines in Gevrey, very elegant with herbal blackberry aromas, slighty minty deep berry flavors on the palate, very long finish. Very high Wow factor, drink now before it closes, or hold for 5 to 8 years. red | 8 in stock | Natural | $69.99 |
Egly-Ouriet NV Champagne Brut Grand Cruwhite sparkling | 59 in stock | Natural | $57.99 | Non-Discountable |
Lallement, Jean et Fils NV Champagne Grand Cru BrutThis had wonderful yeasty flavors and lovely red fruits. Pure, with great depth and potent minerality. This is very suave. Kept gaining in richness and focus as the night went on. LF
Made from 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay, this is one of the richer Champagnes in the store. There is an appetite-wetting bouquet of homemade applesauce which follows through to the palate. It is surprisingly savory with notes of yeast and iron. The richness is not without a lack of focus and there is a precise elegance maintained through to the finish which is truly epic, leaving a beautiful, brown butter aftertaste. RSG white sparkling | 23 in stock | $47.99 | Non-Discountable |
Spain Fortified Guitierrez Colosia NV El Puerto de Santa Maria Juan Sebastian ElcanoThis is a very harmonious and fresh fino showing notes of honey, apricot, grilled nuts and preserved lemon. It absolutely kills as an aperitif and with fresh seafood. What I like the most is that this fino actually has fruit! Check out the bottling date on the back of the bottle. cb white flor fortified | 9 in stock | $12.99 |
Spain Table Xarmant 2007 Txakoli de Alava This is Txakoli is from the more inland of three Txakoli D.O.’s which produces a wine with more ripeness, weight and intensity. This wine has extremely zippy acidity with painfully concentrated notes of grapefruit peel, mineral, and brine. Not the most elegant of wines but it's packed full of personality and pairs very well with all kinds of food, especially cured hams and fresh oysters. cb white | 18 in stock | Natural | $17.99 |
Guitian 2006 Valdeorras GodelloThis is the best Godello I have had all year. Godello can be a fairly aromatic varietal and this wine delivers. There are very pretty aromatics of pineapple, blanched almond, fresh cream, herbs, and white pepper spice. It is medium bodied and highly textural; minerals, spice and pineapple weave together seamlessly and finish extremely long and persistent. The finish is possibly the longest of any young white wine that I have had all year. Great wine. cb white | 7 in stock | Natural | $22.99 |
Biurko Gorri 2007 Rioja ArbantaThis wine from Rioja Baja and is made from 100% organically grown old-vine Tempranillo grapes from around the town of Bargota, in the foot hills of the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. Upon opening, this wine has a bit of reduction and the associated funkiness that accompanies such, but with air the funk blows off and this medium bodied wine struts its stuff; showing a solid core of red fruits, bright acids, piquillo peppers, dried spices, and iron. The finish is very long and persistent. When I taste this I can’t help but thinking this has a Burgundian type of elegance. Serve cool and pair with roast chicken, pastas, and lighter cheeses. cb red | 9 in stock | Organic | $14.99 |
D. Ventura 2007 Ribeira Sacra Burato Possibly my favorite value from Spain. This un-certified organically grown Mencia is from the insanely steep terraces that descend into the river Sil in the up and coming D.O. Ribera Sacra in Galicia near the Portuguese border. This wine shows beautiful aromatics of sweet red berries, rosehips, red pepper spice and minerals. This is medium bodied with soft ripe tannins; a truly elegant and transparent wine that expresses its place beautifully. cb red | 14 in stock | Natural | $18.99 |
Primitivo Quiles 2002 Alicante Raspay Riserva Tinto BrutThis delicious treat from from the Monastrell grape (known as Mourvedre in France) comes from the longest standing producer located in the land of paella... Alicante. The style of this wine reminds me of old school Rioja; it spends an extended ageing period in old oak barrels and even more time in the bottle ensuring maturation upon release. The result is a wine with deep sweet, woodsy aromas of leather, wet earth, vanilla and raspberry confection. The palate is sinewy and full bodied yet lively and fresh. A great wine to down with a nice sized piece of Manchego. A truly lovely Mediterranean classic indeed! (Chris) red | 34 in stock | Natural | $22.99 |
Anima Negra 2004 Vino de la Terra Illes Balears A/NWhen I tasted this recently, I was blown away by how profoundly Mediterranean in character this is. Rather obscure (this is Mallorca’s Caillet grape) and not cheap, I still think this absolutely belongs on the shelves here at Chambers Street. The wine is so expressive and at the same time polished and well crafted; it is packed with notes of ripe red fruits, black olives, smoke, and wild herbs; a wine that will transport you and will enhance any grilled or roasted meats beautifully. I was daydreaming about suckling pig in particular. cb red | 7 in stock | Natural | $49.99 |
Bellum 2004 Yecla Monastrell El Remate (Late HarI was surprised by how much I liked this when I tasted this recently at a restaurant; there are balanced flavors of blackberry, chocolate, pepper, dried ginger and mineral. The flavors and texture of this wine are delicately balanced, complex, and seamless; an extremely versatile wine to have with nearly any kind of dessert. I recently enjoyed this with Churros and a spicy chocolate sauce, but I think this would pair well with any dessert containing toasted nuts, baked fruits, or with a strong blue cheese such as Cabrales. Almost Port-like in style, this is late harvest Monastrell from vines averaging 85-90 years old. cb red sweet | 4 in stock | $31.99 |
Hidalgo NV Jerez Oloroso GobernadorEmilio Hidalgo makes some of the most elegant and refined sherries in Jerez today. I asked him how he achieved such elegance in his wines and he replied that they are fanatical about cleanliness of their barrels and their bodega has a very unique position for the nurturing of the flor. Although there is no flor here, it is not missed. There are delicate aromas of nuts, assam tea, smoke, and salted caramels. The palate is dry and finely textured finishing amazingly long and pure. Serve before dinner as an aperitif, during dinner with poultry dishes or after dinner as a digestive. This will be on my Thanksgiving table. cb white fortified | 2 in stock | $22.99 | Non-Discountable |
Gorrondona, Doniene 2007 Bizkaiko Txakolina TintoThis red wine from the Basque region is made from Hondarrabi Beltza, a grape thought to be related to Cabernet Franc. This wine from 100+ year old pre-phylloxera vines is surprisingly complex - earth and mineral notes with dark cherry fruit. TB
The attractive nose shows pillow-y aromas of bright blue-raspberry fruits, black pepper, earth, and subtle hints of orange zest and sea salt. These flavors are echoed on the light to middle weight palate with suave tannins leading into a beautiful and supple finish of focused berry fruits, granite and a red pepper spice note that seems to intensify with aeration. Blind tasted this is a Cab Franc knock off but with a Basque personality. CB red | 17 in stock | Natural | $29.99 |
Misc. Italy Fay, Sandro 2006 Rosso di Valtellina Made from Nebbiolo in the less heralded Lombardy appellation but this is by no means ofinferior quality. All cherry fruit on a lighter frame with delightful earth, mushroom and wet soil flavors and aromas. The fruit is remarkable for a wine of this pricepoint. A great value. This is my Tuesday night sipper into Wednesday and if need be into Thursday. LF red | 23 in stock | $13.49 |
Italy Tuscany Monte Bernardi 2005 Chianti Classico Our friend Michael makes this excellent biodynamic Chianti from great sites in Panzano; the wine has the muscle to match the famous local beef (and Dario Cecchini the most famous butcher in Italy is just a couple of kilometers away to supply that beef); along with muscle comes beautiful bright Chianti fruit, great length and finish - truly an outstanding Chianti that every year moves a little more towards the old style while maintaining real purity. JW red | 49 in stock | BioDynamic | $22.99 |
Monte Bernardi 2006 Chianti Classico RetromarciaThis is made from purchased fruit but from such good growers that we can't resist it. Michael Schmelzer is making fantastic traditionally styled Chianti that hits all the high points and is still easy to drink. JW red | 63 in stock | $18.49 |
Canneto 2006 Rosso di Montepulciano This wine is an amazing value: it's real pure Sangiovese, with lovely cherry and nut aromas, a little earthy and rich enough to work with cold weather food. red | 60 in stock | $13.99 |
Italy Piedmont Mascarello, Bartolo 1988 Barolo This wine is so good! At dinner in October '08 it was a great surprise that it showed so well (alongside some serious competition). This is by far my favorite 1988 to date - a vintage with a lot of good wines that are just beginning to open up a bit. This had lots of lovely raspberry fruit, mushroom, stone, and baking spices on the nose; opening up considerably with some time. The wine is fresh and lively on the palate, with good length and complexity. Like all of Bartolo's wines this requires both time and thoughtfulness. I would buy our stock if I could... JW red | 12 in stock | Natural | $249.99 |
Mayr 2006 Vino da Tavola Nusserhof TyroldegoWe've always loved Elisabetta Foradori's elegant version of Teroldego Rotaliano, but now Mayr-Nusser's crazy Tyroldego has captured our affections. Teroldego/Tyroldego is a grape that has a lot in common with Syrah (or at least with Syrah as found in Cornas or Crozes-Hermitage): dark, black cherry fruit with an entrancing bitter/amaro finish, lots of smoky and gamey aromas, stony minerality, high acid balanced by richness so you get an intensely flavored wine that's not heavy. Mayr-Nusser's version is much edgier and more exciting than Foradori - a true mountain wine. This will work beautifully with the wide range of Thanksgiving dishes - turkey, yes - sweet potato, yes, etc etc. JW red | 18 in stock | Natural | $37.99 |
Montoni 2004 IGT Sicilia Nero d'AvolaMy wife and I are crazy about Sicily and so we've been on a long search for a really good Nero d'Avola that's less than $20... Tough work, but someone has to do it. There are tons of insipid and/or industrial Sicilian wines; there are some that impress with extract and oak but are d.o.a. from the point of view of typicity and character. Along with the Gulfi Rossoibleo, which is a lighter version, Montoni makes by far the best Nero d'Avola in the price range - actually one of the very best at any price. If you're having something Sicilian, Italian, or Mediterranean for dinner, you owe it to yourself to try this wine. JW red | 13 in stock | $15.99 |
Cappellano 2003 Barbera D'Alba GabuttiCappellano makes special wine - very pure, textured, idiosyncratic, distinct. Along with the monumental Giacomo Conterno version, this is the real thing and once you taste it you may have spoiled yourself for lesser Barbera. JW red | 11 in stock | Organic | $31.99 |
Latium 2005 Valpolicella Superiore Campo PrognàiYes, you can buy cheaper Valpolicella - and that's what you get, something kind of cheap, because this is worth the extra couple of bucks. It's more like a ripasso, and it's really well balanced and just what we need for cold fall nights. JW red | 60 in stock | $20.99 |
Italy White Ambra 2007 Ischia Bianco Ischia is an island off Naples, near Capri. It may be the nostalgic romantic in me, but this wine tastes like the sun by the sea; it's crisp and clean, dry and fresh, a little saline, a little melon-like but with good acidity. We have it at home all the time and dream of Campania. white | 16 in stock | Natural | $12.99 |
Pasquero, Bruno 2006 Roero Arneis I think Pasquero's Arneis beats the famous competition - there's only one way to find out... Perfect with your salumi/carpaccio/risotto/fish. white | 4 in stock | $18.99 |
Montenidoli 2006 Vernaccia di San Gimignano A long maceration on the skins - the tradizionale method - gives this wine real depth. Biodynamic! white | 16 in stock | Natural | $18.99 |
Suore Cistercensi 2006 Vino da Tavola Bianco CoenobiumGianpiero Bea makes this wine with some cloistered nuns - it's "pure, mostly". It really is pure deliciousness - quite rich and dry with zingy acidity to keep it fresh. Perfect for most fish dishes or something rich like funghi... white | 134 in stock | Natural | $21.49 |
Germany Haag, Fritz 2007 Mosel Estate Riesling This is an awesome wine for the money. Hugely expressive nose of lime, mineral and tons of floral aspects. The palate is so sleek and mineral with some richness from the residual sugar. Perfect amount of RS. Has the grip to age for 5-7 years. LF white off-dry | 14 in stock | $21.99 |
Busch, Clemens 2007 Mosel Kabinett TrockenLovely mineral nose with slate notes all over the place. The palate was complex, ripe and juicy and in perfect harmony. There was lovely finesse and good finishing minerality. A sleek Kabinett Trocken. LF white | 9 in stock | Natural | $23.99 |
Haart, Reinhold 2007 Mosel Piesporter Riesling Nice and creamy with good opulence and richness for an estate bottling. So pure, so easy, so gulpable. LF white | 15 in stock | $20.99 |
Karthauserhof 2006 Mosel-Saar-Ruwer Eitselbacher Riesling Spatlese FeinherbAnother discovery from my trip this summer this is a lovely wine. Nose of slight petrol, lime and honey. Wispy and packed with fruit with great finesse and filigree. Really defines what a great feinherb is. Not totally dry. Not totally sweet but a feinherb. LF white medium-sweet | 12 in stock | $39.99 | Non-Discountable |
Monchhof 2007 Erdener Pralat Auslese So chiseled for a Pralat. Great richness and spice and creamy lanolin-like texture. Nice botrytis and again amazing how chiseled and focused this is. LF white sweet | 12 in stock | $48.99 |
Steinmetz, Gunter 2007 Mosel Mulheimer Sonnenlay Riesling FeinherbThe wine had deep, penetrating aromas of wild yeast, corn husks, apricot, peach pits and slate. There was an intense tang on the palate and wonderful balance between acid, richness and fleshy fruit but the finishing impression was definetly a tangy, citrussy and minerally feinherb. Just kept getting better and better throughout the night till the nose was screaming on all cylinders and the finish seemed to last forever. A great wine and Stefan Steinmetz's 2007's continue to impress. LF white off-dry | 2 in stock | $19.99 |
Furst, Rudolf 2007 Franken Muller Thurgau "pur mineral" Hands down this is the best Muller-Thurgau I have ever had. An astounding wine that should make people rethink the bad reputation that Muller-Thurgau has garnished over the years. A very ripe expanisve nose with high-toned florals, sweet greens and gobs 'o' minerality. The palate is creamy and hauntingly elegant with wonderful ripe fruit. A lovely Muller-Thurgau. LF
white | 47 in stock | $22.99 |
Burguet, Alain 2006 Gevrey-Chambertin TraditionBurguet seems to improve with every vintage - amazing, since the wines were always very, very good. This is really classic Gevrey. red | 21 in stock | Natural | $62.99 |
Mugneret-Gibourg 2005 Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru ChaignotsM-G's Chaignots is very Vosne Romanee in style (which makes sense since Chaignots is on the same slope and geologic base that starts around La Tache and runs south). Of course, M-G's wines are all phenominally elegant and refined; this is worth every penny and more. red | 19 in stock | $109.99 |
Chevillon, Robert 2006 Nuits St Georges 1er Cru ChaignotsNuits meets Vosne - a meaty and stuctured wine with some extra elegance from the great master of Nuits St Georges. red | 60 in stock | Natural | $81.99 |
Bordeaux Red Peybonhomme-les-Tours 2005 Cote de Blaye Cru Bourgeois (Arrives 11/18)This wine is an amazing value in every vintage but is particularly strong in 2005. Big and rich with loads of chocolate, cocoa, plum and cassis. A lovely dose of earth and mineral with wonderful quality tannins. LF red | 80 in stock | Organic | $13.99 |
La Grolet 2002 Cotes de Bourg Tete de Cuvee - Arrives 11/12This old-vine cuvee features prune, fig and red fruit aromas and an elegant, supple palate with mineral notes in the finish. Needs decanting or 4 -5 hours of aeration for current drinking, but will develop nicely for another 5 - 10 years. red | 34 in stock | BioDynamic | $16.99 |
Cos d'Estournel 1990 St. Estephe 1990 Cos D'Estournel is very dark and deep, almost black in color. This is classic St Estephe, a big rich Bordeaux with power and a core of iron, this is a Cabernet powered heavyweight champion! Very ripe mulberries, cassis and blackberries; wonderful balance between the fruit and acidity and tannins all come together to make this a copybook example of mature Bordeaux. This wine has been drinking well for 10 years and could last ten more. It is smack-dab in the middle of its plateau of drinkability. A perfect example of one of the best wines Cos D'Estournel has ever made. red | 12 in stock | $246.99 |
Peybonhomme-les-Tours 2003 Premieres Cotes de Blaye Quintessence (Arrives 11/18)The grapes come from Peybonhomme's oldest vines. This has a beautiful dusky shade fringed with purple, spicy, vanilla and violet notes with a smoky touch; in the mouth black fruits, licorice and pleasant, velvety tannins. red | 21 in stock | Organic | $16.99 |
Henri Goutorbe NV Ay Cuvee Prestige BrutThis is an unconventional Champagne. It goes beyond the expected tones of toast and subtle browned butter with a presence of rye, barley and truffle. It has an effective acidity without losing creaminess - this is the perfect Champagne for untraditional pairings with savory foods and meats.
white sparkling | 49 in stock | $38.99 | Non-Discountable |
Australia Carlei 2004 Yarra Valley Chardonnay Green VineyardsThe Carlei Green wines come from five biodynamically certified vineyards in Victoria, the Chardonnay is specifically from the Yarra Valley. It is barrel fermented and it carries the oak influence deftly. Flavors of lemon, stone fruit, and delightfully herbaceous with a nutty quality. A superb Australian Chardonnay - this could be mistaken for Bourgogne Blanc in a blind tasting.
white | 24 in stock | $22.99 |
Langmeil 2006 Barossa Valley Shiraz-Viognier "Hangin' SnakeHand-picked Shiraz and a tiny amount of Viognier go into this co-fermented blend; it has lively aromatics of violet, dark blue fruits and a twinge of licorice and pepper. This approachable wine benefits from the influence of used French barrels, and relative to other Barossa wines, this offering from Langmeil has genuine brightness and acidity, and is remarkably light on its feet.
red | 12 in stock | $18.99 |
La Mission Haut Brion 1981 Pessac-Leognan The original owner (a NY'er who is a Bordeaux fanatic) has now sold us over 8 cases of this wine and we keep buying it because it's so damn good. 1981 produced some excellent wines, and this is one, from the same team and family as Haut Brion; La Mission is often just as good. Absolutely classic Graves; very fragrant with cedar, stone, black-currant, tobacco, it's a wine with great finesse and elegance, beautifully balanced. We wish that every Napa wine maker was required to taste this before they make their fruit bombs! It's true that it's not cheap, but for properly cellared mature Bordeaux of top quality we think it's worth it. JW red | 15 in stock | $179.99 |
Vincent Rapet pouring Jean-Marie de Champs some delicious 1988 Corton The Extremely Pretty Terroir-Focused 2006's of Rapet
On my recent visit to Burgundy the highlight of the tastings was the wine of Roland Rapet. Roland Rapet is the name of the estate but Vincent is the winemaker and proprietor. The 2005's were stupendous, and in many cases his 2006's are not as showy, but they express more terroir while being extremely attractive and very pretty wines to drink in the short to medium term. Drinkability is something that is underrated these days. Sounds ridiculous I know but so many people buy wines to put away and drink lesser wines on a regular basis. These wines can be put away but are just so slurpable today.

Cote-de-Beaune Rapet 2006 Bourgogne En BullyNose of red fruit, earth, sous-bois. The palate is lovely and grippy with high acids and pure fruit. Light-bodied, pretty and elegant. Fun little wine and a value in the high priced world of Burgundy. LF red | 3 in stock | Natural | $19.99 |

Rapet 2006 Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes At the estate in February this wine showed beautiful strawberry/cherry aromas framed by very slight oak, the palate was round and balanced with some brown spice and earth. Rapet 2006 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Ile des VergelessesElegant, incredibly perfumed nose with lovely structure on the palate with rich red fruits. Ripe and generous with silky tannins and an explosive long finish. I like this better than the 2005. LF red | 102 in stock | Natural | $46.99 |
Rapet 2006 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Belles FillesElegant red fruits on the nose along with some nice X-mas spice. The palate is deep with red fruits and is very juicy. Great purity. A lovely medium-bodied wine to drink over the next 5 years. LF red | 37 in stock | Natural | $26.99 |
Rapet 2006 Aloxe-Corton The iron-rich soil (and the wild yeast population it supports) gives unique and complex aromatics to this lovely wine. Black and red berries, brown spices, cocoa and coffee aromas continue on the palate with round plum and earthy flavors. A good candidate for short-term cellaring if you can keep from drinking it now... red | 31 in stock | Natural | $38.99 |
Pierre Larmandier in his vineyards The Great Champagnes of Larmandier-Bernier and Artisanal Cheese, Finest Affineur in the US!
Saturday, November 8th, 4 to 7pmThis is an unique opportunity to taste some of the finest cheeses available in New York along with the amazing Champagnes of Larmandier-Bernier, imported by Louis-Dressner Selections. Larmandier-Bernier farms Biodynamically, they have low-yielding old vines and ferment with wild yeasts. Their Champagnes are now among the very finest, a testament to their great work in the vineyard giving true wines of terroir. Artisanal Cheese is the finest "affineur" in the country, choosing from only the finest farms and maturing the cheeses in their own cellars. Their own Affineur, Waldemar Albrecht, will also be here to personally pair the delectable cheeses with the Champagne and along with other great Louis-Dressner Selections. Don't miss this extraordinary event!
Introducing the Natural Ciders of Julien Frémont!Last winter we accompanied importer Joe Dressner on a ramble through Normandy and discovered the wonderfully delicious cidres of Julien Frémont. Monsieur Frémont works on a breathtakingly beautiful farm in the Pays d’Auge, Calvados, a place where cows and apple trees have defined the landscape for more time than can be remembered. Frémont says that he would gladly do without his cows, about 80 when you count the youngsters born each year, and just deal with apple trees and apples, and the cider he makes from them. But he knows that cows and trees take care of each another, that his trees would not grow and age the way they do, or his apples taste the same, without the cows. These are extraordinary "artisanal" ciders that have never been in the US before - we urge you to try them!

Fremont, Julien 2006 Cidre Pays D'Auge Brut par NatureA very dry cider (too dry for the AOC - "just enough sugar to make the mousse") with complex ripe apple and floral aromas, creamy, earthy spiciness on the palate, refreshing and delicious! 5.5% Alc.
white sparkling | 29 in stock | Natural | $11.99 | Non-Discountable |
Organic Vineyards of Domaine Louvetrie Is You Is or Is You Ain't Organic?A listing in the new environmentally-friendly website Greenopia got us to thinking about which wines are called "organic" and what that really means. We noticed that many wine stores list a very high percentage of organic wines, but upon closer examination, most of the wines listed as organic on their websites are not. Many appear to be estates practicing "sustainable" agriculture, without any type of certification, which allows them to apply treatments as needed. We're not condemning that type of farming but we feel that consumers seeking organic products should get accurate information. At CSW we list as Organic or Biodynamic those wines made with organically grown grapes which have received certification from an appropriate government or private agency (Demeter is the sole certifying body for Biodynamic). That certification refers only to the agricultural methods, however, and not to chaptalization (adding sugar, permitted in many wine regions) or to adding sulfur dioxide, an anti-oxidant, found natually in grapes that retards spoilage. The US Department of Agriculture confuses the issue by stating that "Organic Wine" must be made without added sulfites (even though naturally occuring levels of SO2 are sometimes higher than the 20 parts per million the USDA allows). While winemaking without sulfur can sometimes yield brilliant results, we feel that the sulfur question is really a separate issue, so we'll stay with "wine made from organically grown grapes" for our Organic and Biodynamic classifications. Here are a few of our favorite wines, certified to be made from organically grown grapes... Items Mentioned in this Article:
Breton, Catherine et Pierre 2005 Bourgueil Clos Sénéchalred | 20 in stock | Organic | $26.99 |
Clos Roche Blanche 2007 Touraine Sauvignon Blanc #2A lovely organic Sauvignon Blanc with pretty herbal and ripe melon flavors, a rich minerality in the finish and bright acidity. It's great with any fish or lighter poultry dish and nice to sip by itself, too. Catherine and Didier tend their vineyard like a giant garden and do valuable research on natural pest and disease control - and they're two of the nicest people on the planet! Their wines are delicious and fantastic values.... white | 27 in stock | Organic | $15.99 |
De Moor, Alice et Olivier 2006 Bourgogne Chitrywhite | 5 in stock | Organic | $23.99 |
Peybonhomme-les-Tours 2005 Cote de Blaye Cru Bourgeois (Arrives 11/18)This wine is an amazing value in every vintage but is particularly strong in 2005. Big and rich with loads of chocolate, cocoa, plum and cassis. A lovely dose of earth and mineral with wonderful quality tannins. LF red | 80 in stock | Organic | $13.99 |

Chidaine, Francois 2005 Montlouis-sur-Loire Les ChoisillesWe are lucky to have received a small additional quantity of Chidaines' 2005 Les Choisilles. His vineyard work is magnificent and this wine from a south-facing slope of clay and silex is round and lemony with chalky minerality. Carafe it to drink now or put away 5 years till it opens again...great stuff! white | 15 in stock | BioDynamic | $28.99 |
United States Red Dashe 2007 Potter Valley McFadden Farms L'Enfant Terrible Zinfandelred | 24 in stock | Organic | $25.99 |
Old Gnarly Vines at Gorrondona Gnarly Gorrondona! The Friday 10/30 Wall Street Journal ran an article entitled The Lamb Chop Test: 10 Wine Shops and 10 Wine Pairings. Which Paired Best? We had two wines mentioned in the article. At the top of the list was the Doniene Gorrondona Tinto. Here's a link to the article and what we had to say most recently about this unique and delicious terroir expression from the Basque region in Spain:
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122540883734286131.html
The 2007 vintage of the Doniene Gorrondona Tinto has arrived. We have had the good fortune to acquire a large portion of the production of this rare wine (only 140 cases made) from the Basque region of Spain. Last year at about this time we sent out an article concerning the 2006 vintage entitled A terroir-rific wine from Spain in which we expounded upon our excitement for this un-adulterated and emminently drinkable wine made from 100% pre-phylloxera vines of Hondarribi Beltza grapes, grown un-certified organically.
